    G'day Magicians

I think I have got a serious problem this time.
I am running ME and Office 2000 on a P4 with ADSL connection
Suddenly today when I try to open Excel or an Excel file I get this blue screen and message saying "Excel caused a general protection fault in module USER.EXE at 0007:000057af." and have to Reset to get out of it!

I have tried System Restore to two and three days ago
    I have re-installed Office 2000
I have run Scandisk & Spybot
I have run Hijack This see below because I have seen you request it before.

    Any help greatly appreciated.........Mike

Back up your sensitive Excel data to removable media. Then uninstall Excel in the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel/restart your computer/then reinstall Excel.

You've got too much running at Windows Startup.

Check your available resources by right-clicking My Computer; clicking Properties; Click the Performance tab. Resources available are displayed as percent there at top. Check it when you get done running the System Configuration Utility mentioned below.

Click the Start button; Run; type 'msconfig', without the quotation marks, in the Run box and click OK; Then click the Startup tab; Uncheck anything you don't need running in the background. For reference on what's not needed running in the background in the System Configuration Utility, view this website first and print out the list:

    http://www2.whidbey.net/djdenham/Running_items.htm

It's important that you print out the above mentioned list. The site provides a printer friendly link.

In the System Configuration Utility (SCU), you can uncheck programs you suspect one at a time and restart your computer. If something doesn't work right, you can always go back into the SCU and re-check it and restart your computer via the Start button. The changes are completely reversible by re-checking an item in SCU or by selecting Normal Startup under the General tab in the SCU and all the programs listed run when Windows starts as it was before you started.

    Hi Styxx

Thanks for that...have now got System Resources up from 55% to 93% but Excel still won't work.

Do you mean that I should uninstall Office 2000? Beacuase I can't find Excell separately in the Control Panel Programs Uninstall or on my Office 2000 CD's?

    Mike.

What shorcut to start Excel are you using? It may be corrupted. Use the Start menu - Start; Programs; MS Office; Excel

Styxx, I have been using the Start Menu to try and get Excel to run as well as trying to get xls files to open using Explorer.
    Still NBG.
Most frustrating as I have now spent about 10 hours trying to get the damn thing to go.
Let's hope I dont have to reload WinME.
I do have access to an old machine running the same version of ME, do you think it would help if I copied the User.exe file over?

    With thanks

    Mike.

I don't know if user.exe is machine specific or a universally compatible file, like many. So I'd be guessing if I answered that one way or another. I could only say transfer user.exe over from another machine at you own risk, OK?

Try this safer procedure first if and before you do:

Use System Restore to roll your computer back to a date to before when your computer worked right. Before the error(s) started occurring.

To start System Restore, click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore. Or, in the Help and Support main screen, click Use System Restore under Fix a problem.

You can use SR in Safe Mode or Normal Mode. Safe Mode is best because your anti-virus' Real-Time scanner isn't loaded by Windows.

To boot to Safe Mode to run System Restore:
(tap F8 five times per second during a restart; Choose option number three (3) in the Windows Startup dialog box using the arrow keys below the Delete key, and strike the Enter key; Click Ok when prompted).

Sorry you've been so long on this! I'd still just recommend uninstalling Excel in the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel; Restart your computer; Re-install Excel.

Get a free firewall like Sygate if you don't have one and initiate all high security computer procedures available, internal and external.

Yes. If you have to uninstall MS Office 2K do so, but if Excel was installed on you machine correctly, even if it came on the MS Office 2000 CD, it would be in the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel, OK? It might be best for you to just buy Excel and install it. It really doesn't sound like Excel is installed on your computer.

Please be sure and make reliable backups of all your sensitive data on removable media, MS Office and Excel, before you proceed on any course of action in all this, Ok?

    Thanks Styxx

User.exe won't copy even in Dos because it is being used.
I can't find a Restore date that will allow Excel to work but will try them again in Safe mode.
Guarantee Excel was working perfectly recently but even after uninstalling both Office and Win ME and re-installing everthing else in Office works except excel which just comes up with the start screen before everything locks up.

Sorry to be a pest but I hate it when these things beat me and experts like you.
