Running Windows XP Home Edition on a Compaq Presario 5330US, and recently on a cold boot, I get the following message:

"1720 - SMART Hard Drive detects imminent failure
Your hard disk drive is detecting an imminent failure. To ensure no data loss, backup contents and replace this hard disk.
Attribute Failed: # 05

Initializing Intel (R) Boot Agent Version 4.0.19
PXE 2.1 Build 083 (WfM) 2.0), RPL V2.73[/COLOR]"

At the bottom of the boot screen is
F1 : Boot <F10=Setup> <F12 = Network Service Boot>

The question is whether this is indeed a hardware failure, or is it a virus corrupting the boot sector of the hard drive.

I have run Ad Aware V6, run Spybot, and have the logs from Hijack This which are below:

Logfile of HijackThis v1.97.7

I think if you can get that operating system to boot you should run a chkdisk and if still under warranty then contact the place where you purchased it. Its telling you that the hard drive is failing.

Haven't run chkdsk, but it is for sure no longer under warrenty. I can get it to boot, so I'll run chkdsk and see what happens...

chkdsk made some corrections, but still have the problem. The advisory that you pointed to indicates that this is a false problem. Not sure that I have the skills to upgrade the firmware...perhaps will try this weekend.

just boot your system with WinXP disc and choose the option of recovery. that will work, otherwise format your HD and reinstall your Window again.
