have you tried to getinto safe mode
keep tapping F8 as it boots
    you should get a menu

try last known configuration - see if that works
    if not
    reboot
keep tapping F8 as it boots
    get back to the menu
    then try safe mode
    if that works

    goto
    control panel>
    system>
    advanced tab>
    startup and recovery - settings>
under the title - system failure
    untick - automatically restart

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;320299

now when it crashes - it willnot restart and the blue screen should stay on the screen
post the info on the screen
it will give the errorcodes and a filename, if caused by a driver.

    Thanks etaf,

Tried last know config and it rebooted. Also tried safe mode and it rebooted

I have enough confidence and knowledge to start pulling things apart if you think that is necessary at any stage

i think the best thing now is to disconnect all unwanted devices
    so just keep

    MOBO - PSU - Harddrive

    Disconnect the CD,Floppy, DVD etc

also reseat all the memory modules and any PCI cards and graphic cards

Is this an XP disc or recovery CD
    IF XP
you will also need the drivers for the motherboard, sound card and video
    If recovery usually drivers included

what the make model of the PC
