Boot priority not working. Shows CD-ROM as 1st boot preference in Setup but always boots to hard drive. Have switched sequences to try all possibilities. Floppy boots but not CD-ROM. Tried several Win XP OS discs. None work. Afraid to format HD and try clean install.

Any suggestions. Thanks much

Do you see a message "To boot from CD press any key" It only displays for about 5 sec so you need to watch for it. On some systems [with a bios flash screen] you may not see this message at all. Many times pressing the "tab" key gets rid of the splash screen and lets you see the post data.

Have tried tapping "any key" during boot process. No help. CD reads OK, but can't seem to boot from it.

If your CDROM is not being recognized as a boot device, do not reformat as you will not be able to reinstall. Open the Console and check for lose cables. Refresh their contact by disconnecting and reconnecting the cables, specially the Ribbon Cables.

If the CDROM does not act as a bot device, is either due to a device malfunction or a setting in the BIOS.

CD works OK in terms of being able to "read". What BIOS setting(s) do I need to look at besides "boot sequence"?

You post confusing information here MyO as on one hand you say it won't boot from the cdrom but on the other hand you say the cdrom can read disks.
What, regarding the floppy drive are you trying to boot from? The first of 6 XP boot disks?
When I want to reformat I always set the sequence to the cdrom, as you have to, when installing XP then I change it back to C only.
If the default setting is, as normal, A, D(CD), C then you have to understand the the pc flicks through these options so fast trying to find an os it may appear that the cdrom does not work.
The only time you need to boot from any other device except C is when you need to Repair or Format.
It's either as JS said or you have had several bad disks or not doing it correctly.

USB drivers are not loaded until the operating system is running . . some newer BIOS will have an option to enable USB support during boot . . but it may not be the default.

The remedy is to substitute a PS/2 keyboard/mouse for the installation

Do not know why our colleages are mentioning the USB keyboard or drivers. Is the CD_ROM a USB device, or an internal IDE device? Is the CD_ROM being recognized in the BIOS (Standard CMOS Setup)? Is there an option in the BIOS to detect attached devices?

If an internal IDE device, must be recognized as a boot devive. No USB device should interfere with the boot process, unless malfunctioning.

If the keyboard is not recognized, you cannot "hit any key" to boot from the xp cd. It just bypasses the cd and boots from the hd.
