OS - XP. The boot up process will not continue past the sign on. Once sign on is complete the screen goes black and remains black.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Black as in it is trying to display a resolution that is too far out of your monitors capabilities?

I would try logging into safe mode and dropping the resolution down to like 800x600
