How can I boot from an external dvd drive? My internal drive cd/dvd and floppy in my lap top has expired so I purchased a hpdvd740.

The computer has to support booting from an external drive. Newer computers might support booting from a USB drive, but not all of them do. Go into the BIOS and look for such an option. If one doesn't exist, then you can't boot from it.
