I have a win98 se machine and I was wondering what things I could shut off (untick) when I type msconfig- startup tab that won't hurt my computer. Any help is appreciated.

    TIA.

    Other than:

    ScanRegistry

    SystemTray

    Antivirus program entries

    Firewall program entries

most other programs don't need to be checked and enabled and running.

You can research your computer's startup list by using the "Search" option at this site.

Keep the startup list as small as possible. You computer will run much better and have less problems. (y)

Go to the spyware tools section at http://www.majorgeeks.com and download HijackThis 1.99.0. Once it's downloaded, unzip it and place it in a folder of its own. Don't place it in a temp folder. Once it's unzipped, double-click its HijackThis.exe file to start it. Click "Scan" and allow the scan to complete. Click "Save Log" and save the log in text format with Notepad. Copy-and-paste the entire contents of the log here. Don't start a separate post. We need to work on getting rid of that "nasty" and whatever else might be hiding.

You really need to post a HijackThis log, so don't ignore doing it.

Your computer should run better with the startup load trimmed down.

Click Start - Settings - Control Panel - Power Options.

Set the power scheme to "Always On" and set everything else to "Never".

(Once you do this, your computer won't go into standby/suspend mode, which is good because some computers tend to freeze up when using these features)

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

Go to the spyware tools section at http://www.majorgeeks.com and download HijackThis 1.99.0, which is the most current version. 1.98.2 is an older version. Replace the HijackThis.exe file with the new one.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG, then click OK - Startup(tab). Uncheck the following:

    osa9.exe Read here.

click Apply - OK, then reboot.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

After you've done the above, post a new log.
