I got a secondhand (clearly a bad idea) MacBook Pro. It's listed as MacBook Pro Core i5-2435M Dual-Core 2.4 GHz 4GB 500GB DVD RW, 13.3" screen.
It currently has Mac OS Lion (10.7.5), and I can't upgrade to anything newer, which I would need if I want Firefox (which I do).
Where does this MacBook fall short, that I can't upgrade?

It maybe the age, there is a list of macbooks and OSX it can have
    https://eshop.macsales.com/guides/Mac_OS_X_Compatibility
    and
    https://everymac.com/systems/by_capability/maximum-macos-supported.html

Although the spec appears to be moden

Apple support are very good (in UK they are) and a call to them may help as well

you can use the serial number to identify the machine
    https://everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/
and the latest OSX it can use
look down the list of specs and you will see the OSX sold with and which one it can use now
