I got a brand new desktop. I installed Windows 7 and got myself a wireless card.
First thing I did was to download steam. It's a no-go. It would start downloading, and then freeze on 500 kBs. This happens with Chrome, Firefox and even IE.
I thought it was my Modem/Router at first. But I could still download on my laptop. Even more so that I just recently got a new modem/router from bell to replace the 6 year old one we have now.

Oddly enough, I can browse the internet just fine, and torrents still work.
I tried to download the 3DS Mark 11 bench-marker and it refused to download, but I was able to download a .torrent file for the trial version of the same program.

If anyone could help, it would be greatly appreciated.

goto speakeasy.net/speedtest and see what your results are on there.

it may be a bad wifi card or corrupt drivers. did you install the drivers from the disk or let windows discover and install the drivers itself?

if you did either you should got the the wireless card manufacture's site and download the most updated drivers for your wireless card and operating system

The speed test got 3.2 for download, 0.7 for upload. This is how it has been for a long while now.

I installed the drivers from the CD first. But then I installed them from their website again to make sure they were up to date.

Clarification: the title should be "a few KB" not KB/s.
Yes, the downloads get from 1-99%, but they freeze and stop downloading. I can download .torrent files though, but I don't dare download large files since it would be a waste to figure out after that it stopped and isn't going anywhere.
