I hope this is the right forum to post this in. i have been away from home for the last few months and now that i am back my computer is having a few problems. it was in use while i was gone and now for some reason internet explorer and firefox are not working. im sure my internet connection is fine (i can connect and use windows live messenger and download stuff from itunes) but for some reason when i try to visit webpages explorer tells me that there is no connection.
also my antivirus program has been giving me messages like the following several times a day:
    08-05-23 00:24 Intrusion.Win.MSSQL.worm.Helkern! Attacker's IP address: 202.103.180.105. Protocol/service: UDP on local port 1434. Time: 08-05-23 00:24

and also my taskbar has disappeared and i cannot get it back for more than a second. although this problem was present before i went away. i ran a HJT log and would appreciate it if someone could help me out. Thank you.

You may want to consider removing the Google items and the P2P programs.

[IMG] Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems

    Upgrading Java:

    • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6.
    • Scroll down to where it says Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6. The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications (the fifth one in the list)..
    • Click the "Download" button to the right. A new page will open.
    • Select your platform and check the box that says: I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.
    • Click Continue.
    • Click on the link under Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager.
    • Go to Start - Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
    • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop. alternate download link 1 alternate download link 2
    • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
    • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
    • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
    • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
      • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
      • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Then click Finish.
    • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
    • On the Scanner tab:
      • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
      • Then click on the Scan button.
    • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
    • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
    • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
    • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
    • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
    • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

    I was refering to BitTorrent.

Open Tools, internet options, advanced tab. Have you tried to restore advanced settings? Or attempted the Reset option?

Run HJT again and put a check in the following:

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [BitTorrent] "C:\Program Files\BitTorrent\bittorrent.exe" --force_start_minimized

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
    • Save it to your desktop.
    • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit2.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
    • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

      Code:
      [b]C:\Program Files\BitTorrent[/b]
    • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the light Yellow bar) and choose Paste.
    • Click the red Moveit! button.
    • A log of files and folders moved will be created in the c:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder in the form of Date and Time (mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log). Please open this log in Notepad and post its contents in your next reply.
    • Close OTMoveIt2
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Do the browsers work in other profiles?

OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer - Version 1.0.4.2 log created on 06022008_163018
i also did as you said with HJT.

i made another profile on the computer to see if the browsers would work but they didn't. the taskbar showed up though.

also sorry its taking so long to respond to you. because i can't access this page with my non working browsers i've been having to borrow someone elses computer and its not available all the time.

Remove IE7 and see if that helps. If you don't want to do that I suggest a backup of the data to an external drive, cd or other and then do a Repair install on the machine.

can you please outline the steps it would take to do this.
i did try to remove IE before i asked you for advice but i wasn't able to do it. i went to add/remove hardware and then to add/remove windows components but when i unchecked IE it did not appear to be removed from my computer. the only thing i could do was upgrade to IE7 as i had the previous version up until a couple weeks ago.

It would be in add/remove programs and it's listed as Win(something ) IE7.

    Does IE6 work now?

I would first try setting up a new firefox profile and see if that one works.

no sorry IE6 isn't working but an error message is coming up now when you type an address in the address bar. It says "internet explorer cannot open the search page"

i made a new profile for mozilla as well and it is still not working.
