cable connection freaking out

Dear reader,
I am mad, reallly mad. i just took a test on http://bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/
and ended up getting 170kb when I should be getting 1.5mb.
What should I do, I think its my modem, but my parents are pissed and won't buy me anything that has to do with a computer. so is there anyway I can get my 3meg cable connection to the proper speed without using money??? I need stuff for cable connection and charter is bsing around.

please help internet is my life, and plus im not getting what im paying for

Have you tried other speed tests? Al do you have a guaranteed 1.5 or up to 1.5MB download? Cable bandwidth is shared so there could be a lot of different things.

I just ran that test on my 4mbit Comcast connection, here's the results:

Communications 3.8 megabits per second
Storage 460.2 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 2.2 seconds
Subjective rating Awesome

If you're getting 170 kilobytes per second, it's probably pretty normal. OTOH, if you're getting 170 kilobits per second, that sucks.
