    All,

    First post![IMG]

We recently had a lightning storm nearby and since then I haven't been able to use my modem (cable). The computer just says "network cable unplugged". I tried the modem with the cable on two other laptops and both are working fine, ie. the problem is not with the cable or the modem.

I then went onto device manager and checked the network adapters. It says "this device is working properly".

Also, when I connect the cable from the modem to the computer, there is meant to be a light on the modem which comes on (the pc/activity light). This does not light up at all.

Can anyone help me? I am hoping this has not been caused by the storm.

    Thanks
    Mike

I am using a Motorola SURFboard SB5101 cable modem. I am using this modem right now via ethernet cable to my laptop to write this reply, so I am pretty sure the problem is not there.

Yes I have done that a number of times. Since it is working with the laptop, I think the problem is elsewhere.

Have you reset the modem and the power cycled it again? If nothing happen you have to call your ISP to verify if the connection is affected by thunder storm.

The ISP said that there was no problem with the connection. I have power cycled the modem a number of times to no avail.

I am using that same modem right now to write this reply with another computer, so I am pretty sure the problem is elsewhere...

    any more ideas?

Do you know how to check the IP address of the computer? If you please post it.

Check the Computer’s IP Address (Windows 2000/XP):
    - Click the Start button and then click Run.
    - In the Run window type “cmd,” then click OK.
    - On the DOS prompt type "ipconfig//" then press Enter.

    Post the information.

What is the original computer that you have on the modem? Is it really the laptop or into a desktop? Can you tell me how may computers do you have or how many computers are you using for the modem when it was working?

I have 3 computers: 2 laptops running XP (both work fine with the modem), and one desktop running 64 bit Vista (not working). Normally the modem is plugged straight into the desktop computer and the laptops are old and don't get used much.

    Here is the IPCONFIG text:
