So this is a problem I have never seen before and has baffled me. I'm running Windows 7 64, and for awhile I had been getting avast alerts saying they blocked a file trying to access the internet and it would re-direct my browser. So I followed where avast said the file was and deleted it. Shortly after though. My internet stopped connecting to any and all servers. I can't play online games, I can't connect to chat rooms, I can't connect to Steam for those of you who know what that is. But I can browse the internet just fine.

I've tried disabling my firewall, reinstalling firefox, I even went to a 24/7 Tech Support place and they took over my computer only to come back to me saying they can fix the problem but it'll cost me $139. HA! Anything I was watching him remotely work on my computer and he opened CMD and tried pinging servers, sending 4 packets and having 4 packets fail. I'm not going to pretend to understand what he was doing. All I know was he was trying to communicate with servers and failed.

Any help on this would be wonderful! I know my way around computers just enough to get myself in trouble, and I'm not afraid to find and edit files. So please any and all suggestions are welcome! I just want a free fix that I ca do myself.

Can you find that file in Avast's quarantine? Maybe you can restore it?

EDIT: Reading again, I think you've deleted that file manually, right?

    What was the file exactly?

Please click HERE to download and install HijackThis.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile from the Main Menu.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next reply.

    IMPORTANT: Do not "Fix" anything

If Windows is denying access to the Hosts file, disable the UAC and run HijackThis again.

Use your working computer to download the program. Save it to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the faulty computer and save the program to your hard drive before installing it.

Open Internet Explorer. Click Tools > Internet Options > Connections > Lan settings > Proxy server > Advanced > delete proxy server settings > click OK > uncheck all boxes > click OK.

In Firefox, click Tools > Options... > General > Advanced > Network > Settings > delete proxy settings > select No proxy > click OK.

Hey just an update, my dad finally had some time to help with the situation. It turned out to just be some nasty malware that the anti-virus program I was using didn't catch. My dad put MalwareBytes and that found the issue and got rid of it. Then used CCleaner to clean up my computers registry.

But thank you Phantom for helping! It was much much appreciated.
