You need to post your exact system specs. It may be possible to clean install win8 however some hardware is not supported in win8 [that is why you need to post specs]
You do understand that you would need a new lic to run win8 [if it is possible]
FWIW win10 is the superior operating system.

The short answer is 'yes.' I "upgraded" to Windows 8.1 from the horrible Windows 10 as soon as I bought my Dell laptop 2+ years ago. However, with your self described Windows inexperience I do not recommend for you to do so, as driver problems are only one of the annoyances you will encounter.

Better to try to find a refurbished/used computer with Windows 8.1 already installed.

I've been known to argue just about anything....but these days, not so much with an administrator :D

Personally, I'd sooner wait until an upgrade is either needed or unavoidable.

Two years breathing space doesn't seem in the realm of 'soon' in human terms.
Context, of course, is everything.
Geologically, it's less than an 'eye blink'.
Technologically, some think a 'life time'.

That's obvious. The point is that an upgrade is inevitable.
