Can I watch movies I've downloaded on my laptop on my TV by putting them on a USB stick? Or would I need a long HDMI cable? I'm crap with tech stuff. I wanted to do it wirelessly if possible? The files are very large, what GB USB stick would I need?

It depends. Wher are they downloaded from and what did you use to download them? There are several formats that they may be in.

If they play on your laptop the easiest way is to hook a HDMI from your laptop to your TV
