    Hi,

    I've bought a router.
Its only a cheap one, cost about twenty quid i think. ($35.59cents)
For setting up i have to use an HTTP via my browser to the router.
This may be normal, but its new to me.

My question is can i access my router from somewhere else on the
wider network, being as i know its HTTP number ... ?

    John :)

    Mmm,
    that is interesting.

So if i set my PC to 'wake-on-ethernet' then
maybe i can access my PC from somewhere else in the world .....

I suppose i would have to sort shared file/s and maybe a password.

    Is that feasible ?
I suppose that would make my system a bit more vulnerable than before.

But maybe i could restrict that to
only those times i'm away from home.

Still sort of thinking about it, John :)

There's no need to allow remote administration of the router to be able to accept the "magic packet" that WOL uses, just forward the port. :)

    Hi JohnWill,

    Thank you for that reply,
I am sorry to say that i did not understand very much of it.

I sort of understand, i think. I think you are saying that i don't
need to make the router available for remote access to its settings,
I only need to have it switched on and connected
for someone on the net to contact it.

If that is what you mean, then i would be happy to do that.
As soon as i can figure out what to do.

As to the 'Wake-on-Lan', i thought that i would leave my PC off,
and that it would start up if the router told it to do so.
But i am very new to this side of things.

I don't know what 'forward the port' means.

I am also not sure if i would be able to access anything on my PC
from elsewhere, which is what i am actually interested in doing.

    Regards, John :)

Perhaps you should start by telling us exactly what capability you are looking for, then we can suggest reasonable solutions to the problem. Remote administration of your router should almost never be part of the equation. :)

I suggest you not tinker with WOL, but rather leave the machine on, it'll make the problem less complicated. Then you can use an application like UltraVNC if you want to remote control the machine, or perhaps an FTP server like FileZilla if you just want to access files remotely.

    Hi JohnWill,

I was considering if i could access files on my PC from somewhere else.
I don't trust it to run for days at a time, so i don't want to leave it on.
This is actually my second attempt to write this, in Notepad.
About twenty minutes ago, it stopped responding.
    It had become unstable.
A blue screen informed me i could wait until it became stable again,
but i may lose any stuff i was working on.

Well i lost my previous reply.
And it didn't get stable. I had to turn it off manually.

Its only Win98se, running on an old "Fujitsu e-series" (Mobo: GA-6LMM7)
Its been pretty good, but i cannot trust it.
If i am not here to switch it off, then wait, then switch it back on,
it could easily trip up, and get stuck like it until i get back to
    sort it out.

So i was wondering about using a timer socket to turn it on and off,
maybe once or twice a day. That way if it were to 'sieze' it would get
'un-siezed' next time it was started up.

If there is something intrinsically unhealthy about using the W-O-L
then maybe it could be configured to go online when it starts up
    from the timer switch.

    .
I will have a read about 'File-Zilla' i haven't heard about that before
maybe that is just what i am looking for.

    Cheers, John :)

I think I'd work on making the machine run more relabily. Also, an old machine will likely not have WOL capability anyway. I suppose you could use a timer to turn it on, but I'm not sure that would be a reliable solution. What happens if there's an error during bootup?

    Hi JohnWill,

I have spent every waking moment of my time since 1999 trying to make
    this machine run more reliably.
(well not quite EVERY moment, but it feels like it)
My last effort to bring down its failure rate was a replacement power supply.
This actually did reduce its failure rate a bit.

Curiously the one thing i have done which has brought its failure rate down
a bit more, was to leave the cover off.
I left the cover off for a few weeks, thinking that i would have to go back in
after changing the power supply, then when i replaced the cover, it failed
    within two days.

So, being a superstitious fool i removed the cover, expecting to find no
    discernable effect on its performance.
    But it was definately improved.

So i put the cover back on, and it failed within three days.

I can make no sense of this, nothing in there gets hot, maybe a bit warm,
but nothing to the heat that many PCs throw out.

So now my E-series Fujitsu is left to run with no cover on it, except for a
small sheet of hardboard placed over the top by me.

There are quite a few failures which don't show up in the 'Uptime log'
The last digit on the right is usually a '1' thats ok,
but sometimes its a '0' which is a failure.

If i used a timer to turn it on and off, and there was a failure during start
up, then the machine would stay in the failed state until the timer switched
    it off.
The timer would switch it on again later. Maybe the next day, or it could
be set to twice a day.
If it failed on every attempted start up, then this would be a failure that
    required human intervention.
Up until now, it has only a couple of times had a severe failure like that.
The last was a corrupted 'MBR file' ( i think thats what its called)
that needed to be 're-built' whatever that entailed.

So all in all, i think it unlikely that an error during booting would be fatal.

However, i don't know if this PC has 'Wake-On-Lan' and i don't know how to
    tell either !
I suppose it would be part of the mobo specs ... ?

    Regards, John :)

The fact that removing the cover helps with the reliability tells me it's likely to be a cooling issue. I'd get a can of compressed air and blow all the dust bunnies out of the machine. Next, I'd look into adding an additional exhaust fan near the P/S in the rear. I'd also make sure any air entry slots/holes low on the case are not blocked.

I really think you need to start saving your nickels for a more reliable machine. :)

Thats what i thought too, at first.

But there's nothing in there thats more than warm.
Its a GA-6LMM7 motherboard from 'Gigabyte Technology Co Ltd',
using a 333 meg Intel Celeron processor, its not overclocked,
and its barely warm. The warmest item is the power supply and
that is a long way from hot. The processor fan and the power
supply fan are both running fine, shifting suitable quantities
of air. Its reasonably clean in there, it hasn't built up much
of a blanket of dust since i changed the power supply - last
year sometime i think. I have also tried various hard drives,
the one its using at the moment has the lowest ratio of trouble
to running time out of the four i have tried. It's a ten gig
    Seagate ST310211A
    http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/ata/st310211a.html

    Capacity: 10.0 GB
    Speed: 5400 rpm
    Average Read Time: 8.9 ms
    Cylinders: 1023
    Heads: 256
    Sectors: 63

Again a second hand item, but it seems very reliable.

Maybe i shouldn't expect Win98se to be as reliable as a fridge.
But other people seem to get Win98se to run for weeks on end.

However, i am prepared to live with its occasional failure,
unless it gets worse. If it does get worse then maybe the faulty
item will show up, then it can be dealt with.

I tried to read up on Filezilla, but it was not very explanatory.
Its only cos i sort of know what it supposed to be,
that i was able to follow much of the explanations at all.
I will read up some more on Filezilla, but to be honest, i sort
of thought that the functions they go on about are part of my
PC anyway, although i may be wrong, cos i dont really follow
what they are trying to say.

I have met this problem before and i don't know the proper name
for it, it arises when people trying to explain something assume
that others already know as much about it as they do themselves.

It happens in many explanations of many things.
The only way to get through it in my experience is to continue
reading and finding out stuff untill eventually it becomes clearer.

I will read more and more about it, Filezilla, but my current
opinion is that the things it says it will do, are things i would
expect my computer to do anyway.
But i can't be sure yet, i will have to read up more.

Sorry for the late posting, i thought i had posted, but i hadn't
    i saved it instead.

Still reading stuff about Filezilla, John :)
