What exactly are you using to install Windows XP in that hard drive?

What version(Home, Pro, Media Center) of Windows XP is it, and does it contain SP3?

Assuming you're booting from a Windows XP disc, are you deleting all current partitions in that hard drive, then creating a new partition, then selecting the new partition to install Windows XP in, then formatting it?

    Saying it's a "bootable CD/DVD" doesn't mean anything.

Is it an original Windows XP CD, or was it created in some manner in a recordable CD or DVD?

No it's not a original one but a copy.

So there is a problem with the CD drive or the CD or the two just don't play nice together.

Try booting the CD on another computer.

If you have another bootable CD try booting it with the possibly bad CD drive.
