I have a 2 computer home LAN. Both machines run XP Pro, are connected via ethernet using a D-Link DI624 router. No software firewalls on either machine, not even the MS firewall.

My problem is that while I can connect, I can not see all files and folders. Sometimes I can't see entire folders. Sometimes, I can see the folder and some of the files, but not all of them. Usually, in a list of files, I can not see the first few files. For example; if I have a folder of songs named 01.song, 02.song, ...12.song, I can see songs 4 through 12 but not 1-3.

I have checked all file attributes, checked all permissions and even tried setting up the folder as a share, even though the entire drive is shared. What is weird is that when I set the folder up as a share, I could again see only some files but they are different that what I see when I drill down through the drive manually to get to the folder. It is not just this music folder, that is just an example. It is all folders.

I even tried accessing the files/folders on the target machine from that machine directly. In that case I can of course see all files using Explorer on that drive but if I try to get to it through the network location, I can't see all the files, even on that machine.

Can anybody help me?
P.S. I have run and rerun the network setup wizard.

I would 1st try to delete, then re-establish all the shares. Are you using Simple File Sharing?
What would a DIR /A and an ATTRIB *.* (from a DOS box) show?
Since you don't seem to be running any firewall, it might be a good idea to see if your machine is clean from virii/spyware.

I rechecked all the attribs.

I just did a little experiment. One of the files not accessible from the network is named "01. Dear John.wma". When I renamed it to "1. Dear John.wma", without the leading zero, I can now see the file. This is despite that I can see songs 03.*, 04.*, etc. with leading zeros. When I changed the name back to having the leading zero, it becomes hidden again.

Are you using Simple File Sharing? If not, a possible explanation for your observations is that the permissions for some folders/files are not what you think they are.

Yes, I am using simple file sharing. I have the entire drive setup as shared. I am just curious as to why I can see files with some names and not others. Here is a screen shot of the same directory; one view is as a folder on my drive and the other is the same folder as seen through the network.

Is there where the permissions are set?

I set the drives up as shared by selecting "sharing and security" while right clicking on the drive.

I appreciate all your help.

Okay, this is driving me crazy. I have been concentrating on one particular folder , although it isn't limited to this one.

I can not see the first two files of the folder. They are named "01. Dear John.wma", and "02. King Of The Jailhouse.wma". If I rename the first to delete the leading zero I can then see the file on the network BUT, now I can't see the third file, "03. Goodbye Caroline.wma". For some reason, it will not let me see the first two files in the directory.

Next, I copied the entire folder into another subdirectory and I could not see the folder at all through the network. I checked all the folder properties and found nothing there.

Here's where it gets weirder. I created a new folder in the directory and was able to see it through the network. As soon as I copied the files into this new, visible directory, it went hidden. I can't figure this out. I see nothing wrong with the files.
Here is a pic of the files:

And here are the file properties:

Can anybody offer a clue?

Did you try resetting all the shares as suggested?

Please post DOS logs (DIR /a & ATTRIB *.*) instead of captured screens. At least we can rely on them, not like your pictures. The last 2 were supposed to be the same: However one shows D:\My Music\Temp\eee when the other D:\My Music\Temp\eds.

Run ATTRIB *.* >C:\Attrib.txt, then post the contents of Attrib.txt

Sorry, but now we (almost) know where we stand.
On the other box, please run: DIR /a \\Computer name\D:\My Music\Mann\Bachelor No. 2 (Replace Computer name with the appropriate string)

I appreciate your patience. When I ran the dir from the other machine it said it can't find the tgt. But, as you can see, I can navigate there with Explorer. Of course, the dir shows empty when viewed through the network but the two directories are really still there. As you can see, I made my command line with both D:\ as well as a copy/paste from the Explorer address bar just to make sure.

No doubt these suggestions will sound annoying, but if GyBear should run out of ideas, try these:

1. I know you said you are using Simple File Sharing, but double check this by Control Panel - Folder Options - View Tab; make sure that at the bottom "Use Simple File Sharing" is checked.

2. Change your computer names to maximum of 8 (alphnumeric only) characters.

3. Make sure your computer descriptions are not "too" long; say about 2 dozen characters.

Thanks for the suggestions. I renamed the computer to "Eds" and even changed the computer description to "Eds", rebooted but the problem still exists.

I don't think the problem is computer specific. I copied the entire directory over to a temp directory on the other computer. All the files copied but both subdirectories are not visible through the LAN. When viewed directly on the other computer I can verify that they are all there.

I first noticed this problem when my file backup program (SyncbackSE) had trouble with the directory compare phase.

This directory I've been working on was originally named "Aimee Mann". Under that name I had the problem of not seeing the first 2 files in each of the two subdirectories. When I renamed the folder to just "Mann", then I could not even see the 2 subdirectories. I rechanged the name back to "Aimee Mann" and the subdirectories reappear and I still have the problem of not seeing all the files. Very strange.

That is why I wanted to see the files' attributes directly.

The network path was not found message means the directory name was incorrect. Please run: NET SHARE.

I would also try not to use Simple File Sharing on the computer where the files are located, then check the Security Properties for the offending directories and files. You can always switch back to SFS afterwards if you want.

Okay, I turned off SFS. I also ran net share. It said I was sharing C:\, D:\ and All-Users\Docs. I checked the permissions on D:\ and it is set to allow Everyone to "read" and "Change" files. I still have the same wierd behavior.

I checked that Windows firewall was disabled. My router's firewall rules are:

Allow Allow to Ping WAN port WAN,* LAN,192.168.0.1 ICMP,8
Deny Default *,* LAN,* *,*
Allow Default LAN,* *,* *,*

are you connected to the internet (via router)?

Also the router has(should have) a firewall too.

I have a two computer LAN (no router) and I can share files fine. I didn't use any wizards, i just make direct link to the music folder on the other machine.
