I've had 4-5% packet loss pinging to my ISP server for a week now. They tried everything, changing my LAN card, changing the cable, changing the Switch etc. Nothing seems to fix this, so they asked me to reinstall my Windows XP. My question is, can XP at all cause packet loss?

I'm on a LAN btw, and they pinged from their machine and they got no packet loss.

Well, I don't think reformatting is the answer until we do a little looking at the issue!

Have you booted in Safe Mode with Networking to see if that changes the symptoms? Did you try another computer on the ISP connection? If you've only tried one computer, how do you know it's not the modem or ISP?

I tried safe mode with networking. Here's the thing, there's two local numbers I ping with, 192.168.100.1 and 192.168.100.2. 0% percent packet loss on the second one.

I'm not connected to a modem, the Ethernet cable is directly connected to a Network Switch, and many people around here use the same ISP, and from the same switch, nobody's having problems.

And weird enough, this started all of a sudden, never happened before.

Well, I'd start by changing the cable and the port on the switch first, see if that changes things.

They changed the cable. Change the port as in putting the cable into another port right?

Edit - I called them, they did change the port when they changed the cable.

    What now?

    Try these simple tests.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

NOTE: For the items below in red surrounded with < >, see comments below for the actual information content, they are value substitutions from the previous IPCONFIG command output! Do NOT type <computer_IP_address> into the command, that won't work. Also, the < and > in the text is to identify the parameters, they are also NOT used in the actual commands.

Do NOT include the <> either, they're just to identify the values for substitution.

    IPCONFIG /ALL

    PING <computer_IP_address>

    PING <default_gateway_address>

    PING <dns_servers>

    PING 74.125.45.100

    PING yahoo.com

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. (For Vista/Win7, the IPv4 Address)

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

How long should I run the ping tests?

It was too big and got out of the window, but I didn't lose any packets to my IP address, here's the rest of it:

It would have been immensely helpful if you had posted the IPCONFIG /ALL like I asked.

I think I'd be tempted to get a PCI NIC and see if this is the on-board hardware. Just one more thing, did you try this straight to the modem without the router in the picture?

I'm not connected to a router. If there was a problem with the NIC, wouldn't it show packet loss to anything I pinged? Just wanted to clear this up.

The modem is also a router then if there's only one device in the equation. And you are experiencing packet loss.
