I've seen some PC100 memory sticks for sale in my local paper. The problem is that my motherboard has a bus speed of 133Mhz. Is it worth me buying the chips and trying them out?

Right up front they will run slower and if you have pc133 Ram in there now it will slow them to 100 mhz. If they are cheap enough why not give it a try. You could probably take them back.

You can usually change the memory setting in the BIOS for slower memory. FYI, PC-133 is pretty cheap nowadays, I just picked up a 512mb PC-133 from www.pricewatch.com for $42 shipped to my door. Be careful with bargain used chips...
