Is it possible for removable memory of any kind to be infected with worms or viruses and therefore left worthless or ruined?

Only until you shut down the machine. Then they are gone.

"Removable memory of any kind" is pretty broad. The system RAM will not hold any data once the power is off. Flash media (memory cards, thumb drives) will.

It is possible for both types of memory to simply fail over time.
