My father and I have been working on repairing his old Heathkit ID-5001 weather station (Those old DIY kits from the '80s). The only major problem right now is the screen. For about a year, the screen has had these 2 large white spots on it occluding some of the information.

In paint, I made a recreation of what it looks like, more or less. I was wondering if any experts knew what exactly is going on and if it is repairable. Thanks! I wanted to pull the display, but I'm worried that if I try anything, it'll just make it worse, so as I temporary solution, I used a blue marker on the glass screen and colored over the white spots. Unfortunately, getting a new screen would not only be near impossible but when the machines actually do show up on eBay, they go for at least $200 in dubious condition that may or may not be working and may or may not be gutted. And the last time I tried, I wound up in a 5 day bidding war and quit when it hit $500. I would hate to have put so much money into replacement parts to find that I won't be able to fix/replace the screen.
