~I have windows xp home edition. The virtual memory keeps filling up and slowing everything down. Is it possible to clear it out?

    Download and save the

    TSG System Information Utility (SysInfo.exe)

After it's been downloaded and saved, double-click it to run it.

Information about your computer will appear.

When a Windows XP computer doesn't have enough RAM, it relies on "virtual memory" from the hard drive - which is much slower memory than RAM memory.

It's my guess your computer doesn't have enough RAM or has too many programs running or has both.
