I'm cannibalizing a SATA hard drive from an older computer and use it in my existing computer. The hard drive I wish to cannibalize has the WinXP OS in it. My question is: If I install it in my existing PC so that I can format it, will this present a booting problem with my existing PC?

If it doesn't boot up properly go into the Bios and swap the hard drives boot up order so the correct one comes first.

You may be able to swap them in the boot device list, if not there will be a sub-list for hard drives and you can swap them there.
