When i try to access my wireless internet at home it connects to the router but cannot connect to the internet. The router is working correctly as other people are using it and it's working fine. When i try and diagnose problems it says:

Cannot communicate with primary DNS server (192.168.1.1)
(Network diagnostics pinged the remote host but did not receive a response)

Then there is an option to reset the network adaptor and when clicked it trys repairing it and then it says:

Windows tried a repair but a problem still exists. Cannot communicate with primary DNS server(192.168.1.1)

Any help will be very much appreciated.

Could be a non-Windows firewall or security suite blocking networking.

Can you access the internet with this computer connected by ethernet?

    Please show ...

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista or 7 type CMD in the Search box after Start)

    Type the following command:

    IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

You are connected to a router with address 10.0.0.1 and the problem indeed is the DNS server 192.168.1.1.

If you have specified that you want to remove it; you want to "obtain DNS auto."

It's also possible that you have two routers cascaded and the second one is passing on the DNS server it gets from the first router, but then all computers connected to the second router should be having the same issue.

Configure DHCP for Windows Vista & Windows 7

    1. Click on the Start menu, and select Control Panel.
    2. Click on Network and Internet. (Skip this step if you do not see this Control Panel item.)
    3. Click on Network and Sharing Center.
    4. Click on Manage network connections.
    5. Right click on Connection you wish to change and choose Properties. If Windows say it needs your permission to continue, click Continue.
    6. Select Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4) and click Properties.
    7. Select Obtain an IP address automatically.
    8. Select Obtain DNS server address automatically.
    9. Click OK to close the TCP/IP Properties window.
    10. Click OK to close the Local Area Connection Properties window.
    11. Click Close to close the Network Connections window.
    12. Click Close to close the Control Panel window.
    13. Restart your computer.

I don't see anything malicious in the HijackThis log.

Are you running any Symantec (Norton) programs?

And/or have you recently uninstalled a Norton product in favour of AVG?

Open HijackThis and click on the Open Misc Tools section button. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button. Click the Save List button. Save the list then copy and paste it here.

i doubt that Norton would cause this problem, but best to play safe and run Symantec's Norton Removal Tool.

I was going to suggest that but it will remove all Norton products so I wanted to wait to see if there were any others first. :)

Let's also check for possible rootkit acitivty.

    Download GMER from: http://gmer.net/index.php

Click on the Download exe button and save it on your desktop. It will create a oddly named exe file on your desktop. Double click that file to run it and select the rootkit tab and then press scan. When the scan is done, click Copy. This will copy the report to the clipboard. Paste it into Notepad and save it and also paste the log report back here please.
