So I have an old SMC7004ABR 4 port router with print server, and an old HP Deskjet 950C parallel printer. I can use this printer as a network printer by plugging the deskjet into the parallel printer port of the router, and then loading the SMC driver software onto my machine. This works fine under XP, but not under Vista.

In order to set it up you must select Goto Printers -> Add Printer -> Add a local Printer. Here you select "Add an existing port" and from the associated drop down select the "SMC100" port. Click Next and then select the correct HP printer, and follow the process till the end as normal. This is fine.

The problem comes when you have to go back and configure the SMC port by clicking on Properties for the newly installed printer. When clicking the configure port option under the Ports tab, nothing happens. I can't actually input the ip of the router, and so I can't print.

Does anybody now how I might get round this - I have all the latest drivers for the SMC router and the printer, or this another example of me having to upgrade parts of my hardware because of Vista (I've already had to upgrade my graphics card)?

    Hello All,

I experienced the same problem configuring network printing to LaserJet 1100 via SMC print monitor (SMC Barricade router) under Vista Home Premium.

If you need to change the default IP address for SMC port (Vista does not allow you to change port properties) you will have to edit the registry.
    Try the following:

    1) Before editing the registry, make sure you have the latest backups of your system and data - editing registry is risky
    2) Start registry editor - Start/regedit
    3) Find Computer\HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors\SMC\Ports\SMC100 (SMC100 is default port name)
    4) Change "TCP/IP Address" value to your own one
    5) Close registry editor and restart your PC.

Printing to SMC port should work now.
