Hey, I'm a computer noob, so I have no idea what to do.

My laptop (Acer Aspire 5741 with Windows 7) won't connect to the internet. When I try to establish a wireless connection, it says that there is "Limited Access" to the network. When trying a direct connection with an ethernet cable, the laptop does not even acknowledge the connection and I cannot access the internet that way either.

When trying to figure out what to do, I noticed that my firewall is turned off too. When trying to turn it back on, I get the error message "Action Center can't turn on Windows Firewall." Also, there is an alert: "Windows Defender needs to scan your computer," which I haven't done yet since I don't recall having the program. I even ran a virus check and it came up clean.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

What, if any, non-Windows firewall or security suite do, or did, you have on the machine?

Try to connect by ethernet and wireless and show ...

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista or 7 type CMD in the Search box after Start)

    Type the following command:

    IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Vista or Windows 7

Start, All Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following commands, each followed by the Enter key:

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults: netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults: netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

    Reboot the machine.

Shooter, I attempted the commands, but still have no luck. I reset the first 2, but for the IPv6, I get the message "There's no user specified settings to be reset."

After rebooting, I still cannot connect.
