Trying to clean up my favorites in IE8, I entered the Oranize Favorites window. I found two folders that I wish to delete. When I try to delete them, I get an error message which says that the folder could not be deleted because it could not be found!

Is there some way I can delete these folders? They are not a problem, but I find it annoying that the system will not let me remove them from the Favorites listing.

It would help to have the full error, exactly as it is written please.

You can try and delete it from the favorites path (xxxxx represents your user name):

    C:\Documents and Settings\xxxxx\Favorites

Cookiegal: I tried deleting directly from favorites as you suggested, but I received the same message as when I did from the Organize Favorites on the browser. The exact messages are two. I cannot copy them. They read cannot find folder or cannot read folder. Nothing else of substance is stated.

Are you able to delete anything from the Favourites list or just a specific folder?

Did you import these favourites from another browser?

Yes, I have been able to delete other items. I now keep everything on the Favorites Bar. Yes, I do believe that the folders I cannot delete were first imported from Chrome.

I see you posted about that back in February but didn't receive any responses.

Unfortunately, I don't know what else to suggest. :(

Thanks for trying. It's not causing a problem, as far as I can determine. I shall leave this posting for a week; if no solution I'll then mark it solved to get it off the current list.

Please don't mark it solved if it is not. We rely on the "soved" tags for people to find solutions. The thread will close automatically after 45 days of inactivity.

Click Start > Run > type CMD

    Press Enter.

In the command prompt, type de following command:

CD "C:\Documents and Settings\%Username%\Favorites\Name of the folder you wish to delete"

    Press Enter.

    Type:

RMDIR /S "C:\Documents and Settings\%Username%\Favorites\Name of the folder you wish to delete"

    Press Enter.

Answer Yes to "Do you really want to do this?".

    Hope it helps.

I tried the RD & RMDIR commands, but they cannot find the file to remove. Apparently, a feature of IE8 that allows the importation of favorites or bookmarks from another browser produces the name of the imported folders in this way. Even if the contents of the folder were deleted, the folder name remains. This may be related to the fact that the folder is now in my bookmarks bar. It is not really a problem. I am sure other posters deserve more attention. If I could close the thread, I would.

Well, I don't really know anything as thorough, sorry. :(

That folder has to show somewhere in the registry.

Click Start > Run > type regedit

    Press Enter.

    Browse to:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder\Favorites

Is your folder showing in there?
