cannot import outlook PST

    I backed up Outlook before reformatting...saved both the backup.pst and archive.pst (some other files too as I was quite nervous about this).

    Now whe I try to import from the CD it says unable to open folder.

    I then tried doropping those files in the folder

    c:/docs and settings/...../local settings

    that didn't seem to work either.

    I then tried to import from the folder above where I dropped the PST files....error reads unable to open folder...

    What version of Outlook are you using? And is it the same as the one you backed up? You may be able to use the pst file as is by going to services and setting up a personal folder pointing to the pst file.

    same version as the one backed up

    Outlook 2000 v

    Now when I try it says I do not have permission to access that folder (the file is on the desktop)

    And I am the administrator account.

    I'm by no means an expert, so take this with a grain of salt ...

    1. I move my outlook .pst file between two computers regularily - and i never "import" or export anything. I just move the file across the network and place it in the appropriate folder. No importing or exporting necessary.

    2. When files are copied to a CD-R, they are sometimes flagged as "read only". I don't know if outlook can open a read only file. YOu may have to change that attribute in Windows explorer after copying it to the hard drive.

    I supported Outlook for a long time.

    You're perfectly right. You cannot open a PST that is marked as read-only.

    THAT WAS IT!!!!

    It was flagged read only!!!

    I changed that then restarted outlook...nothing happened at first.

    Then I imported and that fixed it....all of my emails, contacts and appointments are now back up to date.
