    At one time this D-link adapter was installed on this same computer but somehow the drivers got deleted. I am trying to reinstall. The computer is running Windows XP Professional. I downloaded the driver from Dlink's web site and unzipped the files on the computer. The Ethernet Controller shows up in Device Manager with the yellow ? so I right click it and the click on Update Drivers. But when I tell it to install the drivers a window comes up saying it cannot install because it cannot find the necessary software. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?

    does this help
    For XP;
    http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/CS-030331.htm

    >Click Start
    >right-click My Computer
    >click Properties.
    The System Properties window opens.
    >Click the Hardware tab,
    >then click Device Manager button.
    The Device Manager window opens.
    >Double-click Display adapters.
    >Right-click on the with the yellow ?
    >click Update Driver
    The Hardware Update Wizard opens and asks to connect to Windows Update:
    > select No, not this time. Click Next
    >Select the following option: Install from a list or specific location (Advanced), and then click Next.
    >Select the Don’t search, I will choose the driver to install option, and then Next
    >Click the Have Disk button, and then click the Browse button
    Browse to the directory where you unzipped the file you downloaded
    Locate and highlight the .inf file

    >Click the OK button.
    >Click the Finish button when done.

    I am following your list of directions but when I choose the option for Don't Search a window comes up that wants me to choose the hardware type, so I scrolled down and chose Network Adapters. Here is where it gave me the option to click on Have Disk so I did that. Then a window came up that wanted me to select a network adapter from a list, but there were no adapters listed. But it had the Have Disk option here so I clicked on that. Now it wants me to select the disk or browse to where the files are. I browse to the directory with the files and click on OK. Now it says, "The specified location does not contain Information about your hardware.

    do you goto the folder containing this file
    > Win2K_XP
    and then it should select this file
    > NetRt61G.inf

    I clicked on Browse then the window came up titled "Locate File" --"Look in" Win2K_XP. Below that is shows the file you name (NetRt61g.INF) and I highlighted that and clicked on Open. But I still got that window but now it says the location does not contain the information about my HARDWARE.

    How to identify hardware in Device Manager

    right click on the adapter

    from the menu choose
    properties
    Click on the Details Tab
    Under the Property - drop down
    Select hardware ids
    Right click and select all
    Then right click again and select copy
    Copy and paste that information here

    You should see a code similar to this

    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_008A&SUBSYS_53058086&REV_34

    please reply with the full code for your device(s)

    The portion of the code highlighted in RED is the Vendor ID and the portion highlighted in GREEN is the Device ID. In this example:

    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_008A&SUBSYS_53058086&REV_34

    Vendor ID = 8086
    Device ID = 008A

    Post back those two numbers make sure we know which is vendor ID and which is device ID

    These codes can be looked up at this site http://www.pcidatabase.com/

    As an example the link for that database tells us that;
    Vendor ID code 8086 is for this vendor - Intel Corporation
    Device ID code 008A is for this device - Intel Centrino Wireless-N1030

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

    from the inf file - this is the supported hardware
    G630.DeviceDesc = "D-Link AirPlus G DWL-G630 Wireless Cardbus Adapter(rev.E)"
    G510.DeviceDesc = "D-Link AirPlus G DWL-G510 Wireless PCI Adapter(rev.C)"
    G630B.DeviceDesc = "D-Link AirPlus G DWL-G630 Wireless Cardbus Adapter(rev.E)"
    G510B.DeviceDesc = "D-Link AirPlus G DWL-G510 Wireless PCI Adapter(rev.C)"
    G650A.DeviceDesc = "D-Link AirPlus G DWL-G650+A Wireless Cardbus Adapter(rev.E)"
    G520A.DeviceDesc = "D-Link AirPlus G DWL-G520+A Wireless PCI Adapter(rev.C)"
    G630M.DeviceDesc = "D-Link AirPlus G DWL-G630M Wireless Cardbus Adapter(rev.A)"
    G510M.DeviceDesc = "D-Link AirPlus G DWL-G510M Wireless PCI Adapter(rev.A)"
    DWA610.DeviceDesc = "D-Link Wireless G DWA-610 Notebook Adapter"
    DWA510.DeviceDesc = "D-Link Wireless G DWA-510 Desktop Adapter"
    INSTALL_DISK_STR = "D-Link AirPlus G Installation Disk"
    DLink.Service.DispName = "D-Link RT61g Wireless Driver"

    Under Hardware Ids there are foul lines of information but it does not allow me to right click and copy/paste so I will type them in carefully:
    PCI\VEN_11AB&DEV_1FA6&SUBSYS_3B091186&REV_07
    PCI\VEN_11AB&DEV_1FA6&SUBSYS_3B091186
    PCI\VEN_11AB&DEV_1FA6&CC_020000
    PCI\VEN_11AB&DEV_1FA6&CC_0020

    That's it.
