I am trying to set up a merge document using MSWord 2000. However, the "mail merge" selection under Tools is not there for me to choose. The only heading available is "merge document." What am I doing wrong? I have created many a merge document at work using MSWord 97, but cannot do so at home on my newer computer which came with MSWord 2000.

Are you sure that Word isn't hiding your unused menu items? To double check this, go to Tools - Customize and make sure the box that says "Menus show recently used commands first" is unchecked, then look in the tools menu again. If it is still not there, and i'm unsure of this, but it might not have been installed by default (reason i'm unsure is because i've always installed all the tools, so I don't know if it is installed by default or not). If you have the Office 2000 disk, try to install it again and make sure all the extra tools and options are selected. Hope this helps.

Derek, Sorry, but there is no sub-heading"letters&Mailings under "tools"

This is so puzzling to me. I have tried all of the recommendation thus far and nothing has worked.

I put in a diskette in my computer at home which contained a data source from a project I created at work. The mail merge tool bar shows and I can work on that project. When the diskette is removed, the mail merge tool bar disappears and I cannot create a new data source. Strange!

When I click on View/Toolbars, there is no "MailMerge" toolbar to chose from. The only time the "MailMerge toolbar appears is if I am working on a document created at the office which has a data source. Really strange. I even tried re-installing MSWord 200 from the disk that came with my new computer, but to no avail. I've given up. I'll just have to create mailmerge documents at work, transfer them to a diskette and then work on them at home.

    Fix your toolbars:

    1. You may get away with Right-click the toolbar, choose Customize. Hit the toolbars tab, choose the menu bar and hit Reset.

    2. If that doesn't work, use the "Lost toolbars" link at:

Thanks to each and every one of you for the differents suggestions in assisting me with trying to access the Mail Merge feature under "Tools." I tried each and every one of your suggestions but nothing worked. Just now I clicked on "Help." Under "Help," was "Detect and Repair." I clicked on that button. I was instructed to put in the Microsoft CD which came with my computer. The rest is history. I was most skeptical upon rebooting my computer as instructed, but when I clicked on "Tool," there was the "Mail Merge" button. I have no explanation as to why it disappeared in the first place, but am happy to report that all is well.

    This is a great forum!
