cannot mute internal speakers

    When I plug in my headphones, my internal speakers in my laptop do not mute. I can no longer listen in privacy.

    Any suggestions?

    That's often caused by a faulty headphone jack on the laptop. When you plug headphones in, a spring-clip inside the jack is moved to one side by the jack-plug. This "breaks" the sound-signal circuit to the speakers. That spring clip is probably distorted or snapped.

    well I considered that; if that is the case, then I need to find a statement that I can enter into my kernel or wherever else. . . to deactivate my internal speakers. . . . I will just use headphones and external speakers if necessary. Now I guess I need the guidance to turn off internal speakers yet to keep my "line out" jack active.
