New kid on the block here --- am unable to open any forwarded messages with .eml extension. Am using outlook express. When I click on the clip, that opens the window asking me to open or save. I click on "open", and that opens a window asking me which program I want to use. No type of "mail" program is available.

I am not technically inclined -- I am strictly a user. I believe I have Outlook Express 5.x version (had 6.0 and had no problems opening), but had to switch back to 5.x for another reason relating to .wav and .dss files I receive relating to my work.

What to do? Right now, I have advised all my senders that I cannot open these emails and that I just delete them.

Welcome to TSG!
It would help us if we new what your Operating system is, Winxp, winME, win98 and so on. We also need to know what version of IE you currently have installed. So if you open Internet Explorer and click the Help tab up top and then click About Internet Explorer you see what version you have and what it is updated to. For instance See attached Pic. Make sure your post back the highlighted items.

Also........
Within this post Deke has laid out the instructions for fixing the association with the .eml extension which we can do later after we find out the needed info.

According to the version spec's you listed you are running IE6 SP1. What did you do that made you think you reverted back to IE5.5?

There may be some unforseen compatability issues with mismatching IE6 and OE5 but lets put that aside and try to associate the .eml files. Have a look at and see if you can follow the instructions given in the post Deke laid down in the thread like I gave in post two.

I keep getting email attachments from a friend who uses outlook express that end with .email, instead of .eml. I tried changing the extension manually and it still wont open. I am using aol and windows 98. Is there any way to get these to open??
Thanks.

I was having the same issues and followed following
To run the Msimn executable file with the /reg option:
Quit Outlook Express.
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type msimn /reg, and then click OK.
Then I wen to open OE and it said address book couldnt open and that OE was not configured?
I have win 98 and IE 5.0
Any suggestions on what to do
I am going to upgrade to IE6 to see if it rectifies the problem
