XP Media Centre. When I click My Documents the folder list appears but will not open any when clicked. Also cannot open My Computer. Control Panel opens and list appears but cannot open some folders such as Add/Remove Programs. Also, I.E. will not start. However programs such as Word will start OK, and will open some files.

jonky, You could try a System Restore to the closest date prior to when this problem started. Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore.

Many Thx for your prompt replies.

what type of PC is it? make and model. Sony vgn-n11s - laptop
what applications do you have installed? Lots - big ones are all MS Office 2007, Macromedia Studio 8, Sage Accounts, etc...
    anti-virus Norton IS 2006
    firewall Norton IS 2006
    spy-ware detectors - Norton IS 2006, Defender

I am also getting the message when opening Outlook 2007 - "Another application has the switch identities or indentity login dialog showing. Choose one identity in that dialog before launching this application again."

Maybe relevant? But ihave no idea what an identity is compared to a User, nor where "that dialog" exists.

    Thx:)
