Using MS Outlook on Win XP sys. I suddenly found I could not delete an email. I found I can open and print but cannot delete, move or Send/Rec.
Error mess: "The messaging interface has returned an unknown message ....restart Outlook."
    Rebooting does not help.
    Thanks for any ideas.

Hi, For the account with the mail problem in Outlook, are the incoming or outgoing servers working? If the mail comes to Outlook from your ISP, check with them to see if their webmail servers are down.

If the email comes from another email program, what is it?

    Like Hotmail, Gmail, etc....

Thanks for your reply Byteman, but if it was a server problem I would think I would still be able to delete or move emails within Outlook folders.
After clicking on Send/Receive the Outlook window shows the percentage of emails received (bottom right) as if normal but no new emails appear. When it reaches 100% it displays "Send-Receive Error - click here" The Receive Progress window which is then displayed says "Task 'mail.optonline.net - Sending and Receiving' reported error (0x8004060C): 'Unknown Error 0x8004060C'

My server is Optonline.net, the cable system here on LI, NY.
If I thought it was on there end, I would call them. They are usually very helpful. It's not being able to delete emails thats makes me thing it's on my end.
I am able to access my emails through the Optonline.net website but I have to resolve this Outlook problem. I thought I might have a virus but all my other programs appear to be normal.
    Thanks again.

Hi, Hmm I can easily direct you to a place or places, with extensive help for Outlook, but I think you could find those...as far as asking about the servers, well, that isn't what may be causing the deleting mail problem, but I want to be sure you can connect, and get or send mail...that the account was still "live". If you can't send or get mail, at least part of the problem might have been the servers.

And, if you would like us to check for malware, I suggest first we get a Hijackthis log looked at:

go to Click here to download HJTsetup.exe
    • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
    • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
    • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
    • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
    • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
    • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
    • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
    • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then save the log and then the log will open in Notepad.
    • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
    • Paste the log in your next reply.
    • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

    Also, please do this:

Open Hijack This and click on the "Open the Misc Tools section" button. Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button. Click the "Save List" button. After you click the "Save List" button, you will be asked where to save the file. Pick a place to save it then the list should open in notepad. Copy and paste that list here.

I can Send/Receive mail if I access my account at the Optonline website. I think I'll contact them and see if they have any suggestions.

That is a good idea to rule out problems with it.

Then, come back if you would like a Hijackthis log checked....

They'll probably only be able to check as far as their service, but maybe they can go through some
    troubleshooting for Outlook.
