I manage a Website, www.alcoholalert.com. Recently I changed the name servers through Network Solutions. Now I can’t access the site through the address shown above on my computer. Strangely, I can still access it through my son’s computer, which is networked to mine. I can also access it on my computer through this link: http://161.58.136.173/ .

I read several similar threads and followed the instructions to no avail.

I have no hosts file (just hosts.sam and lmhosts.sam). I have also done the following through MSDOS:

    cd\
    cd windows
    smartdrv
    deltree tempor~1
    deltree history
    deltree cookies

I’ve scanned for viruses with Norton Antivirus and TrendMicro Housecall, run AdAware, SpyBot, BHODemon and HijackThis. StartupList shows the following:

I have ZoneAlarm, but I disabled it. I have rebooted several times. I still can't access the site. I don't know what else to do. Any suggestions?

I just got to it fine. Perhaps your ISP has not gotten the name change put into their DNS servers.

If it is still not working for you, you can always just add the name and IP address into your HOSTS file.

Thanks Bob. What do I do if I don't have a HOSTS file? Can I create one? Will Explorer, etal. actually use it?

Yes, just create one in the directory where the sample is located.

It worked! I just copied the HOSTS file from my old computer, rebooted and ...voila! After all that head-banging, the simplest solution worked. :D

It makes no sense to me why it wouldn't work without the HOSTS file or even the purpose of it.

Thank you very much for your help.

Glad it worked and thanks for letting me know.

I could use some help with people copying material from my site without permission or credit.

    See http://www.onecomputerguy.com/copies.htm for the details.

dweisse: Incidentally, you have a dialler installed:

    O16 - DPF: {1D2DCA0D-B30F-40AD-9690-087105F214EC} (IEDial Class) - http://fr4- download.nocreditcard.co...t/ieaccess2.cab

You probably want to get rid of this - see http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/IEAccess.html .

Bob: Sadly there is really little you can do to stop people taking your content. There are various silly tricks that attempt to stop people using view-source or whatever, but nothing that actually works. And most of these tactics tend to inconvenience the site users too.

Using a JavaScript page-encryption script is probably not a good idea: you can still copy-and-paste or extract the content using scripting, but search engines will be completely excluded, so people searching for keywords from your text will end up at a content-copier's site instead of your own!
