Cant access my Gateway 1200CS bios

I am upgrading my hard drive and starting a fresh install of windows. Now the computer tries to boot to the blank hard drive and im trying to access the bios and ive looked up that the default stroke key is F1 but i do that all I get is a black screen. Has anybody seen this problem. Thanks for looking

I find the easiest way is to remove a stick of ram or the mouse (if its a ps/2 mouse) you should get a bios prompt when the memory size is mismatched between physical memory and what the machine wants. Missing a mouse it should give you a bios error as well and allow you to hit a key to enter the bios.
