I have been unable to make changes to the optional components in XP Pro, since installation I believe. When I try to access them thru either the add/remove program or thru the system upgrade program from the disc, I get the following error msg:

"unable to open information file msmsgs.inf
error code: 0x2 at line 2011806598"

I did go into the sysoc.inf file earlier (which contains this line), to change the "hide" option and try and remove msn messenger, but I couldn't get past this error, even after I returned it back to hide.

Any suggestions?

Have you run the system file checker? Start/Run/ type "sfc /scannow" without the quotes.
