I just changed apartments and got a new internet connection through Comcast. When I hook up my cisco linksys wireless router, all the green lights are flashing, but my computer does not recognize the wireless router. When I hook my computer up by cable to the wireless router, I get internet. Same computer, same wireless router as old apartment. Please help - I'm getting pretty desperate and comcast / cisco are no help whatsoever. Thanks!

would you do a tcp/ip reset

can we see an ipconfig /all when connected to the ethernet and wireless

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
    ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

We would like to see the results from an ipconfig /all - post back the results in a reply here.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box
(A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

    ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results into notepad and then automatically open the notepad and display on your screen.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results into a reply here
    to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will now be highlighted
    Next
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy

Now go back to the forum - goto the reply and then right click in the reply box and paste the results.
The results from the notepad should now appear in the forum reply.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Vista/Windows 7

Start> Programs> Accessories> and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt box
(A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on the screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following commands:

Note: Type only the text in bold and red for the following commands.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog and press enter

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log and press enter

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log and press enter

    ReStart (reboot) the machine.

    If you receive the message
    The requested operation requires elevation.
Then please open the command prompt as administrator - as requested above
Start> Programs> Accessories> and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt box
(A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

Please note and post back - if you receive the following message :-
    Access is Denied

please post back the results in a reply here - its important we know that these commands have worked correctly and not produced any errors
right click in the command prompt box
    select all
    enter
control key + C key - to copy
    then reply here and
control key + V to paste

would you provide some information on the posts

Did the TCP/IP reset work ?

is the above ipconfig /all when connected to the router LAN and working - if so then the router is incorrectly configured OR connected as you are showing a modem Public IP
which would only allow 1 device to connect

check the connections from modem to router and make sure NOT plugged into one of the LAN 1-4 connections

can we have some make and exact models of the router and modem

    Hi,
Reset did not work. I unplugged the connection from the 1-4 into the internet connection on the router and now I can't get the internet through the wired connection either. I tried another reset after that and got the following message pasted below.
Router is Cisco linksys wrt54g2 v1. modem is motorola from comcast and internet from there works fine. I also tried playing around with the settings on the router page 192.168.1.1 and I can get into the page. At one stage the router was recognized, but only connected through 'local only' (same as when i tried with an iphone - saw the signal but only local connection). Now, I no longer even see the network name when i search for wireless networks.

still not showing a router IP
reset the router back to factory settings - should be a button on the back hold in for 30seconds
    then do a power cycle

connect the Modem to the WAN/Internet/Modem connection on the router
then with the pc connected to one of the 1-4 lan ports
    post back an ipconfig /all

When you switch the cable from the modem to the correct (WAN) router port remember to power cycle (unplug for 30 seconds) the modem.

Okay, internet now works through the cable in the right port to my computer. Wireless still not recognized (by Ipod or computer). However, now my computer says it can't find any wireless networks, even though there are plenty around - I tried the windows diagnostic and got nowhere. I must have messed something up when I was trying to configure the settings. So, now two problems, but at least the internet is working through the cable and the right port. Here is the IP config text

I finally resolved it! Fixed it using these directions:

Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...

For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab

    - Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
    - Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbors network...

    - Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...

    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...

Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select TKIP...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network. Do NOT give this key to anyone and remember the key.

NOTE : Passphrase should be more that 8 characters...

    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 50,Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304,Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 and Click on Save Settings...

Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP.

You're welcome for our limited help, and glad that you were able to work through most of it yourself. :) Most routers default to the Wi-Fi being on with a default SSID such as "Netgear" or "Belkin" or whatever, so you had a bit bigger challenge.
