I posted some problems on this forum, then again on the virus and malware forum, but still have no responses. There are all of the requested logs from the steps I took earlier in those posts. My laptop (HP Pavilion 6000 running Vista Ultimate 64 bit) was working OK since that last post, but earlier today it started being sluggish, froze up, and won't boot up since I manually shut it down. I'm writing this from my husband's laptop. Here's what has been happening:

3 p.m. - forced shut down - used F8 to "start windows normally" - after 25 minutes it was still showing the green moving bar
3:25 - forced shutdown again - used F8 until it made a beeping sound each time I tapped it - just a gray screen - I repeated
this process twice
3:32 - forced shutdown again
3:34 - came back on - said "windows failed to start" - I clicked on "last known good configuration"
3:48 - green bar stuck - then started moving again - then stuck again - the blue disk light was on during this
4:03 - green bar stuck in different place - blue disk light off
4:08 - forced shutdown again
4:15 - turned back on - pressed F8 - chose safe mode with command prompt - loaded files until ...crcdisk.sys - still stuck
there at 4:20 and 4:26
4:32 - forced shutdown again
4:33 - turned on - gray screen - no blue disk light on - pressed F8 til it beeped - blue disk light on but nothing
4:35 - turned back on - pressed F8 til it beeped - chose safe mode - blue disk light on - said "loading windows files" at the
top, "please wait" at the bottom - blue disk light flashing - nothing but gray screen in between
4:50 - currently as I'm typing this it's stuck on the ...crcdisk.sys again

Can someone please help?!? Thanks!!

The most important thing on any computer is the data files. If you have important data files on this laptop then stop trying to fix the thing and concentrate on copying those files to another disk.

If you need help in doing this get back to the Forum and I or someone else will guide you through the process.

Thanks, Tabvla! I guess I do need help with the file copying, since I have no idea how to do that when I can't even get the computer to boot up in safe mode.

I just tried turning my laptop on again, this time trying the F10 key. I entered "diagnostics." It said the test would take 57 minutes, but in less than a minute, it said "1-04 fail." When I looked this up, hard drive failure was mentioned. I had a new hard drive put on last year in early November (2009). After the hard drive was replaced, the computer was still not working right. I took it back to the shop, where it sat for a week without being touched, and I was told the motherboard needed replacing. The motherboard was supposedly as expensive as just getting a new computer. I brought it home, ordered a Vista Recovery Disk, restored the OS, and the laptop had been working fine ever since then. Current problems began on New Year's Eve, but my laptop had been working normally since then, until this afternoon.

Needless to say, I am ready to tear my hair out!!

I am going to repeat what I wrote previously. If the data files on the computer are important to you then STOP trying to fix it and concentrate on copying those files to another computer.

You need to follow these basic steps: -

1. Find another computer with enough free disk space to where you can copy the data files. You should NEVER fill a hard disk. There should always be at least 15% free disk space.

2. Remove the hard disk from the laptop. How you do this depends on the laptop. Some laptops have a simple push-button on the side which will simply pop the disk out. Other laptops need the bottom plate to be removed. On almost all laptops it is a fairly easy, non-technical job.

3. Beg, steal, borrow or buy a SATA to USB patch cable. These are not expensive and can be obtained at any computer shop or online at Amazon (see attached image for an example).

4. Using the cable connect the disk to the other computer.

5. DON'T backup the data files. It is much better to COPY them over. This takes more space but is a much simpler process.

Once you have done the above we can then try to fix your laptop.

Thanks again, Tabvla! I didn't know there was a cable for SATA to USB. Good to know!

After letting things be for a while last night, I was able to run a CHKDSK in safe mode, following which the computer booted up. I uninstalled 3 recently added downloads, the Weather Channel Desktop and Toolbar and Google SketchUp8. Then ran a complete scan of MWBAM, which found nothing.

Things are working normally today so far. I remembered that I had previously copied my documents to a thumb drive, so since things were working okay this morning, I saved everything more recent, plus all of my photos, to the thumb drive. I just did a system performance report and read everything thoroughly, but according to the report, everything checked out. I'm baffled by the problems of yesterday and New Year's Eve.

Again, thanks for your help!

Now that you are sure that you have copies of all your important data files we can discuss the laptop problem.

There were 2 major issues with the HP Pavilion 6000 series. The first was that the Graphics Chip seriously overheated. You could build a small house with the number of HPP 6000's that have died due to an overheating chip. The second problem was that the quality of the hard disk varied from average to awful. You could build a garage to your little house with dead HPP 6000 hard disks.

I assume that your machine is about 4 years old which may mean that the hard disk is thinking about a retirement home.

Suggest that you regularly make copies of your important data files and just wait for the machine to die at sometime in the future.

Tabvla, I will remember to back up files regularly. I did have the hard drive replaced last year (Nov. 2009), but continued to experience problems until I re-installed the OS. Had not had any further concerns since the reinstall in Dec. 2009. I'm not sure what kind of hard drive they replaced the original with; will see if I can find the paperwork. Thanks again!
