I have a Toshiba Notebook which will not boot. Was running Windows XP.

The following text message appears when notebook is powered on:

Windows could not start because of an error in the software.
Please report this problem as :
load needed DLLs for kernel.
Please contact your support person to report this problem.

No floppy drive only a DVD/CD drive. I do have 3 discs which came with the notebook labeled Revcovery and Application/Driver CD.

If I put any Cd in the drive and restart or power off and on, the screen just goes to the message. Can't seem to boot from a CD.

Any help is appreciate as toshiba won't help unless I write them a check.

Thanks

Enter the BIOS Setup utility:

Press the [Esc] key while the system processes its Power On Self Test (POST). In order to use this method, the computer must be "off", meaning not in sleep/suspend or hibernate mode. Press the power button, then immediately press the [Esc] key (it doesn't hurt to hold the key down). When the POST finishes, you'll be prompted to press the F1 key to enter BIOS setup. Press the [F1] key to access the BIOS setup program.

Scout around the BIOS and set the boot order to CD_ROM First. That should redirect the boot process to the CD_ROM first.

Thanks. I got that far.

My next issue is, the recovery disks at boot say Win 98, but the notebook came installed with Win Xp. It also says it will erase everything on the HD.

I don't believe toshiba gave me a WinXp disk.

Do you think I can load a retail ver. of XP over the existing version?

Anyway to save the data on the HD?

Thanks

The Recovery CD will always erase the computer as will reimage the Hard drive to Factory Settings. You should pay a visit to the store you boought the computer from and inquire about the Windows 98 Recovery. It has happened before. Users have received the wrong Recovery CD.
