Hi ~ My parents just got their first computer. I tried to help them set up their IE with the IE Wizard. (This is like the blind leading the blind by the way.) When we try to connect to the net thru IE it tries to connect, but fails every time. A box comes up that says check your password and try again. We went thru the HELP steps and nothing seems to work. They can still connect to the web thru AOL, but my Dad wants to be able to get mail on Outlook Express. Can anyone help? Thanks

Hi not-a-whiz,Go to Start>Settings>control panel>click on internet options>click on the program tab>down at the bottom will be a box,put a check mark in the box that says Internet explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser.

Let us know if this helps

Yes, that's right. Can still use AOL but not IE...it won't connect to the web using IE...the modem makes noise like it's trying to connect and then it disconnects and says to check the password and try again. The password is correct. Thanks for replying!

I sorta think you have to use AOL's software to dial into their service. You cannot just enter you AOL username and password and access number into the Windows internet connection wizard, it wont connect. Your best bet might be to get rid of AOL as soon as you can, =P

You MIGHT be able to still use OE while dialed in to AOL using their software, you may need to mess with the connection settings. Or call tech support, but for some reason it seems as if AOL tech support isnt very helpful. =/

You must sign on to AOL first before you can open a separate window to browse with internet explorer. My guess is the internet wizard was your first mistake. It asks for a number to dial up on, which you do not want. If you went through the whole thing, you set it up as a dial up, with an aol access number that will not respond. You do not want to use IE when connecting to the web through AOL. I am not smart enough to tell you how to UN-do the wizard, but try checking "never dial a connection" and make sure that AOL is your default connection (Tools | Internet options | connections tab). If all else fails, uninstall AOL and reinstall it. I think it will correct the settings when it installs.

Good luck! AOL and IE seem to be slightly incompatible and if the settings are not perfect, IE will not connect to the web. Usually, however, you can still use the AOL browser.
