I recently did a defrag on my laptop hard drive, and i noticed that i'm getting errors on the same files, saying that some files were unable to be moved.

Here's a log from when I ran it in regular Windows XP.

    Code:

And here's the one from running in safe mode. You'll notice they're pretty similar.

Any ideas on why this is happening and how to fix it?

    Thanks,

Windows needs at least 15% free space on a HDD in order to defrag, so it you have at least a 40 gig HDD you have 30% free and that's enough.
Perhaps you could try using a different defragger.
Google 'free defraggers' and choose one to try.

Try running a diskcleanup to free up space. Also run chkdsk before defrag. If you still cant free up space, you can download the trial version of Diskeeper09 and try defragging with that as it does a good defrag even under low free space.

Many files will not be defragged no matter what you do. Defragging offline will increase the number you can do, but even then some files cannot be accessed.

Don't bother trying. A small amount of fragmentation will make absolutely no difference in performanace at all. Even shutting down the defragger makes more fragmentation, so trying to get 100% would only last a few seconds, anyway. It is unnecessary and a waste of time to try to defrag all files, and some large files may not have room on the drive to be contiguous.

If you run a defragger once in a while, and use the same one all the time so they don't conflict in their placement strategies, then you have done all that needs to be done.

If there is a particular file that you want to defrag, move it off the drive and then move it back. It will be placed as neatly and contiguously as possible.
