I have 2 folders on my desktop that I can't delete.
One is the msn internet folder that was present with the loaded OS
    that came with the unit.
The other is the folder that was generated when I loaded software for
    a Psion Palmtop.
I have deleted every reference to msn in the registry and now a message just comes up, "can't find the .exe file". But still cannot delete the folder.
The other folder opens a IE window with the following message in the
    address bar.

I can locate the file along with 3 other associated files but can't
delete, with a message "file is being used by Windows."
I have also searched registry for a lot of variations but can't find
    any more.

Someone mentioned that they have become system files and therefore
    hard to delete.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Try booting to Safe Mode and deleting from there.

    Try this:

    Back up your registry: Start/Run/Scanregw/yes.

Go to Start/run and type Regedit.

    Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Desktop\NameSpace

Each icon has its own CLSID key (a 16-byte value, that identifies individual objects) and which points to a corresponding key in HKCR\CLSID.

First, export the regkey (highlight the 'Namespace' key, and go to File/export) in order to back it up.
Now, one at a time, click each of the keys under NameSpace, watching the name that appears in the right pane's Data column. One of them should match the icon you want to get rid of. When you find it, right-mouse click its key in the left pane, choose Delete, and close the Registry Editor.
Click on the desktop once to place the focus there, then hit F5 on your keyboard (to refresh). The icon will disappear.

    Good luck,
