    Hi guys,

When i try to use msconfig to turn off several startup programs, no matter what I chose, when I click apply and ok, and close msconfig, and then open msconfig again, all the programs i tried to turn off have a tick by them again... there seems to be some junk programs there - i use AntiVir Guard as virus protection, so I guess it's unlikely to be a virus -

Does anyone have any ideas on why this doesnt work and what I can try?

    Thanks,

    Sache

When you're done unckecking what you want to turn off, go to the general tab and select 'Selective Startup'. When you reboot a message box will come up, put a checkmark in the box and hit OK.

    hi, thanks for the repluy

i tried this originally - i use xp pro; as soon as you remove a selection frm the startup list in msconfig it automatically selects "selective startup" in the general tab. i rebooted but no message box appeared as you described... any suggestions?

Get Startup Control Panel, a replacement for Msconfig. I use it all the time, it's easier to use than Msconfig.

What programs or entries return? There are many that need to be turned off in the program itself such as Messenger programs...look for" tools, options" or "preferences".
