can't find scanner driver in windows 7 64-bit

    Sorry if this isn't the right place to ask this. I just realized that Canon didn't update their driver for my CanoScan Lide 50 Scanner for Windows 7 64-bit. I tried to find a work around and came across an article that said the CanoScan Lide 60 driver works.

    I tried to install it the way described in the article, from the Canon site.

    But the folder I got with 7-Zip didn't have the file in it that it said it should, so I tried to just install it directly. Windows flashed a popup asking for permission to install, right over where it said where it would be installed, and when I clicked OK, that other window disappeared. Now I can't find where it's installed.

    The article explained that I have to manually update the driver. I found the scanner in the device manager, but since I can't find the driver anywhere, I'm stumped. I wouldn't even be able to uninstall it.

    Does anyone have any insight into this? Thanx.

    Try looking in C - Windows - TEMP folder.

    The only thing I see in the TEMP folder that was modified today is a .sqm file (no idea what that is).

    Wouldn't a driver be in a permanent file somewhere?

    c:\Windows\System32\drivers or driverstore for non-installed ones as well

    I found something in driverstore\filerepository that was modified today, but there was no .inf file. The device manager found nothing useful to install.

    That file has mostly .dll files, also .ds, .dat, .pnf, a couple of things labeled ICC Profile.

    The dates of/on/in the files are misleading as they are NOT anything to do with the date of install. Even an .inf file may be a shared one that was already there.
    The only date that you might be able to use is the DATE ADDED to library and that will obviously only help you if there is a module that was ADDED by the scanner.

    I first plugged in the scanner two days ago, and it immediately said it could not install a driver. So all dates related to it should be within the last couple of days, right?

    In any case, there was no driver, so 'updating' it isn't exactly what I'm able to do. I looked in the CanoScan folder but of course there was no .inf file anywhere. The instructions in the article said to use the update feature, and then look for the .inf file in the folder where the driver is installed.

    I assume that .inf file wouldn't be a shared one unless there was a similar driver already on the computer, right? This is a new computer, and no other scanner has come anywhere near it. I see nothing else like it listed in the device manager.

    Shouldn't there be some way to search for the driver? I've looked up the original name of the driver file that I installed, but apparently that's not the name of the file it installed. Unless it never actually installed it, but then why would Windows ask me for permission to let it do that? I find it outrageous that Windows' permission popup obscured the dialog with the actual program I was working with, and then made it disappear.

    I'm really not sure what to do here. The scanner is in perfect condition and Canon has basically told me to trash it and buy a new one from them (and in the process lost all my respect!). I also don't know if there are any problems with leaving this driver on the computer, wherever it may be, and forget about it. I'm not going to give up on making this scanner work. I can't afford to. If I try some other work around, will this driver then interact in some funky way
    with another driver I find?

    there are NO 64 bit drivers for W7 for any of the canon lide range
    I have had the same problem & the only options are either
    Buy a new scanner
    if you have W7 Professional or Ultimate, install Virtual Pc & install XP mode & run the scanner under that
    install & use vuescan from hamrick
    I found vuescan difficult to work with so I use XP mode under virtual PC

    The driver for Lide 60 that I downloaded was the one that Canon generated for Windows 7 x64. Check it out:

    I installed it, but I can't find it. And the computer doesn't recognize it as a driver for my scanner. Last thing I saw before Windows blacked out everything but the prompt to give permission, was that the Installer said C:\ with nothing behind it. I assumed that it would install the driver there, but I don't see any .inf file there, nor any new folder. Is it possible it's not installed at all? Since I can't find it, I can't uninstall it. Should I run the installer again? Or is that going to cause a whole other problem?

    I had looked at VueScan, but when I ran it through JottiScan ClamAV found a problem. I've heard that ClamAV has false positives sometimes, and the other scanners JottiScan uses didn't find anything, but I wanted to be safe than sorry.

    I have Windows Home Premium, so the XP mode option won't work for me, I guess. What a bummer. I would have liked to have the option of using XP for some things. I'm not at all happy with Windows 7, but was advised to go with this OS because it's presumably more secure to have the latest version. I'm not convinced.

    Look for the Vista drivers as they seem to work with Windows 7.

    I have a LiDe 25 running on a 64 bit Windows 7 machine, using the Vista driver.

    I'm not sure the problem is which driver to use. I installed a Windows 7 64-bit driver into a Windows 7 64-bit machine.

    If I install the Vista driver, will I have the same problem again, where the computer doesn't recognize the driver, and I can't find the .inf file?

    The file that you are downloading from Canon for the LiDe60 scanner is
    File Name: lide60vst6411111a_64en.exe
    OS: Windows 7 (x64), Windows Vista (x64)
    Language: English

    Just double click this file and the driver will be installed.

    I installed it already. At least I believe I did. I ran the installer, got a pop up overlay from Windows asking for permission to let the installer access, I gave permission, and the installer window with the information of where the driver would be installed was gone before I could ever see what it said.

    So I assume the driver is on the computer. But I can't find it.

    You can find the scanner in Device Manager, correct? Right click on it - Properties - Driver tab - Driver details. You should see something like my attachment. In my case my scanner is part of my HP Photosmart all-in-one, and I think that the scanner driver is serscan.sys. Note that the location is given.
