I have a HP LaserJet 1200 which I want to use in Windows 10. There are apparently ways to do it. But I have spent hours trying out 'solutions' found at HP's website, Microsoft's website, and other sites. None of them work.

I know for a fact the printer works. I was using it on a regular basis with no problems before I was forced to upgrade to Windows 10.

I found this video in a Microsoft help thread. I got to 3:40, everything went exactly as shown in the video up to that point. Then I lost it. Datenträger = 'Have Disk'. I don't have a disk for the printer because it's more than 10 years old.

I can get it to print test page. That's all it prints. It doesn't print anything else.

Apparently I need this file: HP Universal Print Driver for Windows PostScript (64-bit) https://support.hp.com/us-en/driver...river-series-for-windows/503548/model/4157320

I've downloaded and installed it several times, both not as Administrator and as Administrator.

Here are some other threads I've found, trying out the solutions unsuccessfully:

Could somebody walk me through this? Thanks.

    TURN OFF printer
    Try this
    In Windows, go settings
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/4028054/windows-10-repair-or-remove-programs
    as here
    NOT programs and features

    Select your HP printer.

    Select Uninstall.

In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.

In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”

Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.

Type printui.exe /s and click OK.

    Click on Drivers tab.

Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click remove at the bottom.

    Select OK.

Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows.

Now go to the HP link and install the usb driver
    https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/COL44939/fp-148007-1/Dot4x64.msi

Then from the HP link install the PCL6 driver#
    https://support.hp.com/gb-en/drivers/selfservice/closure/hp-laserjet-1200-printer-series/29789

    REBOOT the computer
    TURN ON PRINTER

There's no on/off button for this printer. To turn it off you have to unplug either the USB cable, or pull the power plug out, or both. I don't want to make any mistakes, so should I unplug it before starting the procedure you've described, or at some other stage in the process?

There is a problem attempting to complete this instruction.

There were 3 printers listed that were 'printers' I added while trying to install the one printer. They are "HP Universal Printing PCL6", "HP Universal Printing PCL6 (v.5.8.0)" and I think the last one was called "HP Universal Printing PCL6 (v.6.6.5) but it is gone now - that's the only one that Settings allowed me to delete. Every time I try to remove the other instances I get an error message: "Unable to remove HP Universal Printing PCL6, x64, Type 3 - User mode driver. The specified printer driver is already in use."

When it says "Remove driver only" and "Remove driver and driver package", which one is correct?

    Please clarify as
the driver tab is not in settings but on the window that opens when you execute the
and have you gone through the devices and printers as well
If that does not help go to services and stop the print spooler service .
Then try and if you can then delete, go back to services and start the print spooler service again.

Yes, that's what I meant. The problem starts in the window that appears when I run printui.exe /s

I found Print Spooler in Services and stopped it. Now when I try to remove the other 2 'printers' I get this: "The local print spooler service is not running. Please restart the spooler or restart the machine."

In an Administrative Command Prompt, type the following...

    Code:
    net start spooler

I did that as Administrator. Tried removing the printers again. Got the error message. Restarted the Print Spooler. Tried to remove the printers again. Error. Stopped the Print spooler again, tried again, error. Ran the cmd again to start spooler. Then all the 'printers' had disappeared from the window. All of them, even the automatic ones. I don't know if I've created a new problem.

    Continuing, I went to:

Now go to the HP link and install the usb driver
    https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/COL44939/fp-148007-1/Dot4x64.msi

and clicked on it after it saved. It didn't show itself doing anything. I don't know if it installed or not.

Continuing, which file do I download? All of them?

    Version File size Release date

    Driver-Universal Print Driver (2)
Driver-Universal Print Driver for Managed Services (2)
    Driver-USB (1)
    Software-Universal Print Driver (1)

Ok. I installed the USB file, then plugged the USB cable back in. I'm going to install the PL6 driver. Which one do I need to choose: "Traditional Mode", "Dynamic Mode", and "USB Mode Plug & Play"?

    As per this
    https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02536202
although written for 7 I would not think it is different
With USB mode plug and play you connect it and follow
    on the link

With traditional or dynamic and you can see on the image the difference
    you apparently
I appreciate on my earlier reply I advised differently about when to disconnect etc, but hope you will realise that this procedure is hard to find on the HP site

I unplugged the USB cable again and chose 'USB Mode Plug & Play'. Now a window says "Finish" Driver: HP Universal Printing PCL6

Status: To complete the UPD installation connect the HP USB printer to the computer.

    Done.

After the printer is physically connected Windows will launch a Plug and Play event that will create a new HP Universal Printer in the Devices and Printers folder.

Nothing is happening. There's no event. I haven't clicked 'Finish' yet, is that why?

    Click 'Finish' to close Setup

I have not a clue but I presume you need to click finish
You normally do so on such installations

    It works! Thanks!

On my previous attempts at installing this printer, it would print a 'test page'. But it wasn't printing the real test page. It only printed a few characters in the top left corner of the page. It would not print any other documents.

After completing the entire procedure as you described, it prints a proper test page which fills up the whole page. Then I tested it on other documents, and they all came out perfectly. I really appreciate your assistance.
