Here's my question: I have wireless connection to both my computers in my home. Our neighbor, who helps us out quite a bit, has a laptop. As a favor, he uses our signal, which is otherwise encrypted. I live in Fl. He went to Mich for the summer, taking his laptop with him. After some difficulty, he finally got a signal & was able to connect. (He doesn't know how that occurred). Now that he's back, his computer shows he's receiving my signal, but he's not able to connect to the internet. What could this be and how can we correct it? Could it be a changed IP address?

make sure the firewall is not blocking

you are breaking your ISP rules by allowing your neighbour to use your internet by the way

Release and renew IP address. Also, make sure he has your encryption access code. Without the code, he can still see the router but, he would not be able to access the internet. Also, if you are using a WPA encryption and his system doesn't support it, he will not be able to access even with the code. I know he had access before but, just items to check in case you or he had made chnages. I would be it was him as he was connecting to another wireless setup in Michigan. He may just need to setup the connection with your router encryption code again.

How does he release and renew the IP address? I haven't changed anything and he has the password to get on but he can't even get that to come up.

ok, i have his laptop here in my house. it shows my network...all the bars are showing but it continues to say Not Connected. When I tried to release/renew the IP address, it says it can't because the media is disconnected. I'm still at a loss. It was set to connect automatically, so I changed that to manual but still no luck. Where do I go to get back into where he'd put the password in?

goto device manager and see if the network adapter for wireless is still there

Make sure the wireless is enabled
Make sure the wireless is swiched on - theres a switch on most laptops or Function F key
    Post an ipconfig /all here
    -------------

    Device Manager
    start>
    control panel>
    system>
    hardware tab>
    device manager button>

    network adapters
    click on the + sign

    post backs whats there

    also any ! X or ?
    ---------------

    ipconfig /all

TWO Methods to do that - some people have problems with ONE----

    ONE ---------------------------------
    start
    run
    cmd
    ipconfig /all

    rightclick in the box
    select all
    enter
control key + C key - to copy
    then reply here and
control key + V to paste

    TWO -----------------------------------------------

Start, Run, CMD to open a DOS window and type:

    IPCONFIG /ALL >C:\RESULT.TXT

Open C:\RESULT.TXT with Notepad and copy/paste the entire results here.

Ok, first of all, all is well in Device Manager. No x's It shows the Ethernet Realtek as well as the Wireless G adapter.

Using ONE in your previous instruction, here's what eventually came up:

    Host: (with his name)
    Primary DNS suffix
    Node Type Hybrid
    IP routing established No
    Wins Proxy enabled No

    Ethernet adapter Wireless Connection 2
    Wireless G adapter

    Dhap enabled yes
    auto config yes
    Auto config IP 169.254.201.34
    Subnet Mask 255.255.0.0
    Ethernet
    Media status media disconnected
Disc Realtek RTL8139/810X family fast ethernet

    Ethernet
    physical address 00-a0-d1-b4-40-71

means the Network is assigning an internal IP

It could be a firewall thats blocking the connection - try switching that off

are there any other wireless network in your area at all?

take secruity off your router and see if it can connect

I've tried all your suggestions....still isn't connecting, so I'm going to advise him to take it to the shop.

But...thanks so much for all your help. I really appreciate it.
