First: I've searched around for the answer to this problem with no results.

Ok, my problem is that whenever I have firefox open and I try to launch itunes (with any method - shortcut, quick launch, even going into program files and launching it from the actual .exe), the itunes.exe process starts, but it hangs at about 14,688k memory in Windows Task Manager. When I kill the process, close firefox, and open itunes again, it opens successfully.

Also, when I have itunes open and I try to open firefox, firefox.exe hangs at around 8,600k.

What should do? I tried disabling foxytunes (the only ffx extension that accesses itunes), without success. I scanned my computer and no adwasre/spyware/viruses show up.

Thanks in advance for the help.

P.S. I'm running Windows XP SP2.

How much RAM do you have installed on your computer?

(Control Panel>System>Main Panel should show you how much memory you have).

When it "hangs" is your hard drive light doing anything?

Sorry for not responding for so long. I have somewhat figured out the problem:

-The hard drive light does not blink.
-I have 1GB RAM

What happens is, lets say I start up Firefox. I get the arrow+hourglass cursor for 1 or 2 seconds, then it changes back to the arrow. The program never opens. When I go into Task Manager, I see firefox.exe running, but it's taking up 0 CPU and about 8,000-9,000k memory, and these values don't change. I am forced to kill the process.

This started out with only firefox and itunes, but recently has expanded to nearly all programs (except for task manager). Some days, nothing will open while others, I don't have this problem at all.

I have done a full system scan with Norton and found nothing. If you need a HJT, just ask.

P.S. I know I have a problem with svchost.exe where on startup, it takes up 10-20 CPU and 52k memory, more than any other program. My computer lags a lot, but I know I can't close it because its a system process (I looked at the services in program explorer). I just brought this up because it may be realted to my problem above.

I seem to remember there being a folder in program files>iTunes called Mozilla. Maybe something in there is clashing with iTunes. Try deleting that folder, (you don't need it anyway, I had to delete it earlier due to another problem and both programs still run fine).

sorry i havent posted a hjt, my problems just got worse...first off, i'm lucky that i was able to open internet explorer to type this....here's whats wrong:

1. my computer is horrendously slow at startup and while a log on
2. when i open task manager, i see svchost.exe use up 5-50% cpu and hog 15k-70k memory (this is not a virus - i checked and the path is right, scanned it and nothing showed up)
3. Most of the time, no programs will start - i click the icon, and nothing happens, even when i start from the start menu. the thing is, when i open task manager, i see the process that i just opened (e.g. iexplore.exe), and its taking up a certain amount ov memory (e.g. 24,878k), and 0 cpu. on certain logons, this happens with all programs, and others, it doesnt.

Right now, im looking at a possible reinstall of windows. please tell me if theres anything easier i can do to fix this.

Post the hijack, if you can. Something is very wrong as you have already said. The obvious possibility is some sort of malware.

Another possibility is disabling norton and seeing of things start working faster. Two very opposite ideas here I know, but norton has a mind of its own. I have had a situation where a friends sony viao would not work properly because norton decided to block some of the preloaded sony software that runs on the machine.

Granted it's probably not the only problem but Itunes is horrible software. I used to have itunes refuse to open until I ejected all media from my DVD drives. did the same thing it did for you in the processes tab, but not actually open.
