It should just work if you use the play button the the CD drive. The CD you are trying to listen to is it a regular audio CD?

its a regular music cd, theres a spot to plug my head phones in the cd-rom drive and theres a little volume control next to it, there is no sound that comes out of the headphones

I think it doesn't work because I need some wire in my cd-rom drive going to the sound card for it to work.. is that right?

No, that cable is only needed to transfer analog audio from the CD-ROM drive to the sound card for playback through the speakers. However most new systems are using digital and the cable is rarely ever installed anymore.

And if I remember correctly, if you have digital audio enabled for the drive and are using a media play to play the CD then no audio will come out the drive - I really can't remember and can't try it since most new drives no longer come with a headphone jack.

Do you have a play button on the CD-ROM itself?

I figured out how to fix it, I had to go to the proporties of my cd-rw drive and I had check off 'enable digital cd audio for this cd-rom device' its works now :)
